Before You Start the Program

Here’s a handy checklist of tips:

Get your UBC card.
This is your ticket to getting your U-Pass, borrowing books from the library, qualifying for student discounts, and so much more.

Pick up your U-Pass early.
It gives you access to ride the local transit (bus, Skytrain, SeaBus, community shuttle) throughout the Greater Vancouver area — and it’s automatically included in your student fees. Make sure you opt out if you are attending a field centre.

If you’re looking to live on-campus, send in your UBC Housing application.
Year-round housing recommended. Ensure that you self-identify as Aboriginal in order to guarantee housing.

Planning to live off-campus? Check out UV Rentsline.

If you’ve moved in the last 3 months, you need to update your contact information in the Student Service Centre (SSC).

Look up and purchase your books.
Buy or rent textbooks, find UBC swag, and purchase computer equipment here.

Note: books for all courses and/or sections may not be available before school starts.

Take a bus ride to UBC and explore UBC campus.
Check out the UBC Welcome Centre (located in the Robert H. Lee Alumni Centre), Neville Scarfe building, the Chan Centre, AMS Student Nest, and Brock Hall. We recommend you take a detour to the Rose Garden, Museum of Anthropology (MOA), Nitobe Memorial Garden, Irving K Barber Learning Centre, and the Beaty Biodiversity Museum.

Opt out of the AMS Extended Health Plan: if you are First Nations and covered by your band council.
Review the site to make sure you are covered before you decide to opt out.
